fortune cookie

My mom brought me some Chinese food to rehearsal last night and my fortune cookie said:
In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.

How very very poignant

what sarah said

my current song to play on repeat:

And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breathes as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak of the LCD took you a little farther away from me
Amongst the vending machines and year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye

Then I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself
Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room just nervous paces bracing for bad news
Then the nurse comes round and everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die

days of my life

I woke up tired today. Yesterday I came back to York from Wilmington. The night before, I got to see Rachael, went to a quiet open mic, and ate too much at Golden Castle.

Yesterday was Poppop's funeral. I knew it would be hard, but it was harder than I expected with all the awkward dynamics, conversations & questions about my dad's health, and just the fact that it's impossible to anticipate my reaction going into a funeral. He served in the Navy, so the actual burial was really beautiful because played Taps on the bugle & did the 21 shots. I don't mean to be morbid, but they inscribe the top of veterans' caskets & it's actually very pretty:

Tonight, I went to my first rehearsal for Anne. It seemed well run. We played a learn each other names games, and of course I was the only one to get answers wrong. I like the theatre space itself, it reminds me of somewhere but I can't remember where yet. People in York are so nice it can throw me off sometimes.

good morning

I had a dream last night that I was eating a bowl of cereal and after I drank the milk someone had written will you marry me on the bottom of the bowl. I can only hope that it will be that romantic in real life.

I think Oceanic is affiliated with the island since Cindy Stewardess was so chill about joining the Others.

it has taken me five years to work up the nerve to audition again after the personal tragedy that was the Gordon College theatre department...but I did and am going to be playing Anne in Anne of Avonlea at the end of Feb. The story is that Anne gives up her dreams of being a writer in the big city to come back to the country to help old Marilla take care of the farm. Art imitates life.

lotto

My sister read me an article the other day about some guy who bought a lottery ticket, died, then won ten million dollars.
I relate.

2009

If NYEs are an indicator of the year to come, then 09 will be fine. NYE 2008 was the worst NYE of my life and 2008 was the worst year of my life, so I am a believer in the theory.

I introduced Gigl/Otis to New York City for the first time and she did me proud. No indoor accidents, no hit-and-run incidents, no eating Minty/Milo. On NYE, Eliz and I went to two parties~the first in the lower east side in the imaginary Peter Cooper Village and at Dan's on the upper west. So 2009 happily arrived to me with a newfound hatred for cabdrivers, a newfound appreciation for Edie Sedgwick & Marie Antoinette, and a newfound tolerance for NYE.

To me, the Killers are to music what Lost is to television. And the thing I love about them is that their cds always come out with themes/songs/specific lyrics that are always so specifically applicable to my life. Hot Fuss was the summer of 2004, when I was about to move to Massachusetts & was coming out of my cage and I was doing just fine. Then Sam's Town came out as I was leaving New Hampshire to move back to Wilmington, which pretty much must be the city that inspired the song. And sometimes, I closed my eyes and saw the place where I used to live when I was young. Continue to Sawdust, a very Romeo & Juliet era of my life. And finally, we have the Killers' newest, Light & Day. I don't like the cd title because it sounds too Polyphonic Spree song, but I definitely have needed consolation in my darkest hour with all this impending doom going around.
